Old Town – Walking tour (4h)

Gòtic - Barcelona

Walking around in the Old Town is to taste 2000 years of history. We will visit the Ramblas, the most famous avenue in Barcelona; the interior of the Boqueria Market, the most visited market in the city; the Liceo Theatre, a great example of the magnificence of the bourgeoisie; the gothic Pi Church; the old Jewish District, the Sant Felip Neri Square and the imprint that was left upon it by the Spanish Civil War; the Cathedral (exterior); the Royal Palace; the City Council and the Palau de la Generalitat (Government Palace); the roman ruins in the Augustus Temple from the first century B.C.; and the church of Santa María del Mar (interior). We will also make a few other stops to see other exceptional places of the city that I will keep as a surprise for you.
Halfway through the tour I suggest we make a stop to rest. To me, one of the best options is to go to one of the historic chocolaterias of the city where we can taste the “Suizo”: hot chocolate with cream and churros.

Notes: It is not possible to visit the Cathedral on Saturdays after 17:00 and on Sundays only from 14:00 to 17:00. Shoulders must be covered at all times inside the Cathedral. The Boqueria Market is closed on Sundays and on Mondays many of the fish stops are closed.

If you’d like to, you can expand this tour with some of the following options. They are all located in the city centre and can be reached on foot.

Palau Güell (12€): Designed by Gaudí for the Güell family to live in. Located next to the Rambla, Gaudí vas able to find an infinity of solutions for this small space. It has been available for visits since 2011.
Picasso Museum (11€): It was a personal wish of Picasso and it’s the only museum in the world in which we can see his evolution from his birth as a painter until his Cubism years. Another important aspect we can see in the museum is the donation the artist made of the 54 paintings that make up Las Meninas.
Museum of history of the city (7€): in the mid-twentieth century, the Barcelona subsoil was discovered, at 11 metres below the present level lie the old streets of the Roman City (the romans founded Barcino). The museum allows us the make a jump in time to see the base of the city walls, or what was once a laundry, a domus…
Palau de la Música (18€): The Catalan society unified forces to build a place where the Orfeó Català Choir could rehearse and play. The building is probably the most famous work of the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. The visits are held in groups and they require making a reservation.
